Laurent Martres was born in Paris, France. He attended school in Paris, London, Barcelona and several cities in Germany. A few years after college, he set out on a 20-month trip around the world, photographing his travels extensively. READ MORE
He then lived in Tokyo, and as a permanent resident of Japan he taught at Sophia University. During this time, Laurent worked as a freelance photographer and researched the origins of Sumo and its ties with the Shinto religion resulting in Sumo – Le Sport & Le Sacre. His years in Japan have had a profound influence on his life, philosophy and his photography.
Laurent immigrated to the U.S. in 1982, settling in Southern California. He explored and photographed the Southwest extensively and published Land of the Canyons in 1998. He developed his company, PhotoTripUSA, and spent his time on the road writing and photographing his award-winning Photographing the Southwest series.
Laurent continues to travel throughout the Southwest and the world. He returns to France often and visits Japan during Cherry Blossom time each Spring. His photographs of Europe, Japan and the American Southwest vividly reflect his extraordinary life story and the beauty of our world.
